Our Story: FLAME Feminism
Our English name, Feminist Leadership and Mobilization on the Edge, is abbreviated as FLAME, which signifies for our passion for spreading tinders of girl power and kindling lights of gender equality.
Our Chinese name, “Bianbian Nuli,” literally means “women’s power on the edge and with an edge.” Along with FLAME, “Bianbian Nuli” refers to the dynamic process in which new tongues of feminisms continue to engage dialogues with multiple margins, and spark transformations.
The name expresses our belief that the social movement of sex/gender equality should “come from individual lives and serve in everyday life.” It also implies our style that is “refined and fresh” while at the same time “shrewd and spicy.”
“Feminist leadership and mobilization” speaks to the feminist empowerment and capacity building that recognize gender/sexual diversities, to the political power from an alliance among marginalized social groups, and to the creative power of knowledge (re)production that aims to challenge gendered stereotypes and sexual stigmas.
“Edge” not only refers to the margin in opposition to the center. Our Chinese translation of “edge” is “bianbian.” In plural forms, “bianbain/edges” can refer to our local partners at social borders, to alliances over the transnational boundaries, and to everyday survival strategies of marginalized groups on the edge.
